Re: Overwhelmed by ATC...

Like other folks have said, radio speak is a different language and it takes
people time to learn it and use it correctly in context. What worked for me
was listening to live air traffic control via the internet. www.liveatc.net
wasn't around when I was training but I was able to get some other feeds.
LiveATC gives such a great selection but most importantly, they have
archives of many of the feeds.

What I would do if I were learning is to:
1) listen to it as much as I can to get my brain used to the phraseology.
Try to understand what they are saying and look up the terms that are
unfamiliar.
2) pick some archived feeds with similar traffic. After I hear each call
from ATC, I'd pause the MP3 and "answer" them. After resuming the audio, I
could get a feel for how well I did compared to the other guy.
3) work my way up to the busy ones (JFK Approach, BOS Approach, etc.)

Getting good on the radio is a long process. Many private pilots will never
sound like an old hat airline pilot but there are many that do.

Hope this helps,

Marco
