I've used several newsreaders through the years; mostly Outlook Express.
Switching to an IMac this year meant switching readers as well. I
presently use Thunderbird which allows trimming.
I've found through the years that Usenet boils down to 3 choices for me
anyway, with reply format; top posting; bottom posting; and insertion
posting.
It's interesting really and of course is quite individual a choice, but
I'm set up for a bottom post reply with automatic cursor insertion at
the bottom as most of the posts I reply to are fairly short and are
single post replies.
But from there it gets complicated as to the best approach in posting on
Usenet. The arguments as to the best method go on and on. Everyone seems
to have the best answer.
Personally I've found the answer elusive and have never been able to
isolate a single "best" method for Usenet replies.
If you constantly post the top, someone not completely familiar with the
thread to that point gets a confusing post.
If you post the bottom, everyone needs a mouse with a 12 inch scroll
wheel on it to keep from developing arthritis in the knuckle of the
scroll finger :-)
Probably selective editing and insertion is the best method for general
use as a thread gets longer with multiple quotes.
I find I still favor a bottom post for replies to posts with quote not
longer than the height of my monitor screen.
For something resembling War and Peace, I either insert or top post.
Bottom line for me is that regardless of accepted protocols, I've never
actually been able to nail Usenet down to one simple rule that
universally applies to all situations.
