More to the point, a fair number of folks here thought I was being
silly insisting that my kids pay for their music. This story makes
this old Dad feel better about that decision.
My son is studying all kinds of computer stuff, and video editing, and
broadcasting stuff, and through school has gotten all kinds of programs,
gratis.
He needed to download one that he didn't have, so he could learn it for a
part time job he was going to start soon. He wanted to be a step ahead, and
learn it before he needed it.
He went to a file sharing site, and downloaded the program, and installed
it; a few weeks later, the university froze his internet access, and sent
him a letter to appear before some of the university officials.
Turns out, some business association was tracking the site he used, and then
contacted the university. He got out of it with some university probation,
and a letter of apology, but I think he got the message. Loud and clear.
