Why bother? You can get better results simply by burning the compressed

even more (from its already-degraded compressed format).
True that. In actuality, the only time I've used this method was
capturing something that was streaming, not really trying to "rip" from
a DRM format. If you can get your audio onto a playable CD, you're
done.
If you find something overpriced, the ethical response is to not buy it.
Stealing is wrong, whether or not you're stealing from a criminal.
True that too. M-W says one definition of "ethical" is "conforming to
accepted professional standards of conduct". In that context you're
exactly right. Another definition is "involving or expressing moral
approval or disapproval". Maybe that one leaves room for a little
civil disobedience. :)
...(have you let the RIAA know that you steal music?).
Nope. Haven't mentioned it. I stay away from the peer-to-peer
networks. I'm certainly not "without sin" though.
Another aspect of online music is the instant and on-demand nature of
the music selection. I certainly have at times paid $1 a track (or
whatever) to grab a song I needed a copy of right at the moment, for
instance to learn to play for a cover-band gig. You certainly can't do
that as easily by recording the radio.
Required Aviation Content: I can't wait to trade in my KMA24 audio
console for one of those PS Audio drop-in-replacements with better
audio quality and a cell phone/mp3 player input. I'll have to rewire
the jacks for stereo though.
Just note the previous comments here pointing out that the solid-state
players are the way to go for aviation use. Apparently hard-disk based ones
don't live very long when exposed to high altitude air densities.
Yup. The head apparently rides on a "cushion of air" over the disk
platter. What I wonder is this: wouldn't this problem be avoided with
an airtight seal? In fact, it seems like venting to the outside world
invites particulate matter into the system anyway. I'm sure there are
good reasons... I'm just curious. Maybe temperature variations
preclude maintaining a constant sealed air pressure. I'm using my
solid-state ipaq pocket PC as a music player. (I'm waiting for the
all-tube version, although weight and balance might be a problem in the
airplane. :)
