Why would you say that? There has been NOTHING in this thread that suggests
that Jay's entire machine is being trashed, never mind that something like
that happens due to an application crashing.

"Having to rebuild the box"? What does that mean? Jay hasn't had to
rebuild anything. He moved some files. That's all. He hasn't even
established that he doesn't have a hardware problem. Even your beloved Mac
OS isn't immune to hardware problems.

Probably because you are hampered by your own operating system religion,
unable to distinguish between a problem with an operating system and a
problem with a particular installation of an operating system on a
particular instance of computer hardware.

Then you or someone else has configured your system incorrectly. I have
Windows XP on a four year-old laptop and it works perfectly. I never have
to reboot. I run Windows XP on three of the four computers in our
household, (including my laptop and one other), and they are all perfectly
stable. The desktop computer only gets restarted for things like hardware
changes and rearranging the furniture, and the occasional software install
that requires a reboot (including some Windows Updates of course).

Well, how well does the operating system on your wife's laptop work when
running on your laptop?
In any case, it's true that laptops are notoriously more difficult to deal
with than desktops. Furthermore, whether you're looking at laptops or
desktop computers, Apple has the luxury of having to run their operating
system on only a half-dozen different hardware configurations, and as a
result they can much more easily ensure everything works as intended.
However, that's hardly justification for saying something as dumb as
"Switching to an operating system that doesn't trash your entire machine
when an application crashes would be an even better move".
