Laser designation has been used since around 1971 in fighters,
starting with the "Zot" which was carried by F-4Ds out of Ubon. It's
gone through forty years of technological advances both at the
designator end and at the weapon guidance side of the system.
There are infrared laser systems, but AFAIK they are not the
predominant format.
Unless there is heavy smoke or haze along the sightline, the beam
would not be detectable, only the spot on the target.
