And how the hell did they catch the AR234, with jets it still isn't
faster than the P51?
The max speed of the Ar 234 is about 461 mph. This speed is a little
down on the 481 mph or the Ar 234A because the B version had proper
landing gear replacing the trolley. Since the speed of the P-51 was
between 437mph (P-51D) to 441mph (P-51B) there was not much margin.
Since the Germans were expecting the introduction of the allied jets
they developed the Ar 234C which replaced the two Jumo 004B jet
engines of 880kg thrust (1760kg thrust total) with four BMW 003A2
engines of 700kg thrust (total 2800kg)
The speed climbed to Mach 0.8 or 528mph. The aircraft was mach
limited not thrust limited so it could climb at a high rate at that
speed. About 4 Arado 234C were delivered.
The Arado 234D, which had the more powerfull Jumo 004D engine
(entering production at the end of the war) should have pushed the
aircraft to about 495mph.
