As for Canadian Hurricane production, the generally agreed total is
1,451. Mason,. in the Hawker Hurricane gives the following production
block break down, which total 1,204, so something is wrong.
P5170 to P5209, 40 aircraft, shipped to UK between March
and November 1940, RR Merlins.
Have you any information about how many of those would have been
available for issue to squadrons prior to 10 July 1940?
Few made it before early July.
Mason notes almost all were shipped to England. He gives brief
histories of 21 of the 40 in the batch. P5170 was in England in
March 1940, for the others he lists the first dates mentioned, usually
when issued to squadrons, are August 1940 or later and the entries
indicate they are in England on these dates. Interestingly P5209,
which you would think to be the last one built is listed as joining 111
squadron in August 1940. All up the first dates mentioned in 1940 are,
March 1
August 4
September 9
October 4
November 1
So 19 out of the 21 have dates.
Of the ones Mason does not list,
P5177, shot down on 29 September 1940
P5184 was shot down on 14 September
P5185, shot down on 1 September,
P5186 shot down on 24 February 1941
P5205 shot down on 26 September 1940
(from Fighter Command Losses).
The best idea of the numbers comes from The Narrow Margin by
Wood and Dempster, appendix 5, fighter aircraft production and
fighter aircraft imports to England by type of fighter by week, for
week ending 1 June 1940 to week ending 2 November 1940.
Hurricane imports, week ending, number,
8 June, 1
22 June, 3
20 July, 3
10 August, 4
17 August, 2
24 August, 9
31 August, 9
14 September, 1
26 October, 1.
Total 33, plus at least one more that we know of in March.
For 10 July at most 4 would be available for squadron issue using
the Wood and Dempster figures, which account for 33 of the 40.
Then add 1 for the arrival in March and note there are 6 more
unaccounted for but most probably either retained in Canada or
not imported into England until November 1940 or later.
Appendix 8 in Wood and Dempster give the RAF reserves of
fighters again by week ending by fighter type for week ending
28 June to 1 November. As of 29 June there were 170 Hurricanes
ready for issue, another 25 estimated to be ready within 4 days,
another 59 being worked on and another 39 awaiting repair or
modification. A week later (5 July) the figures were 222, 21, 74
and 45 respectively. In the week ending 6 July some 65 Hurricanes
were built. So any Canadian Hurricanes would have ended up
within these totals.
The week ending 30 August was the low point for Hurricanes
immediately available for use, the figures being 78, 22, 127 and
31 respectively.
