What's worse is when they start playing dramatic music in the background.
They almost all do it. Fox, CNN...
What kind of music is dramatic music?
Any sort of music in a straight news broadcast or "feature" is dramatic
music and probably violates the ethics of straight journalism.
Technically, though, it's usually in a diminished or minor key to give that
dark, ominous effect. Do we need to hear Adaggio for Strings or Wagner to
watch video clips of our soldiers fighting in combat?
And what's wrong about the media telling the public things they think the
public might be interested in hearing about?
If they require music to tell the story, they're not telling it straight,
and it should set off your propaganda meter. (Regardless of whether it's
pro- or anti-issue.)
If you don't like the way your newspaper or radio/TV news station is
presenting the news, why don't you just change stations or newspapers as a
means of letting them know that you don't like what you're seeing or
hearing, or write them a letter or call them on the phone or send them an
email? Bitching about their >style here isn't going to change
anything....
Who says I don't? I have a degree in journalism and worked in broadcast
and print journalism. Civilian and military. I'm just telling you how it
is. If they have to underscore a story with music, they're doing it for
dramatic value. For example, there was no dramatic music when the planes
hit the towers. Invariably, though, the Troofers and the media networks
will add some music to their stories the way movies and TV shows will, but
when they do it in the movies it's to set a mood, to foreshadow or to elicit
an emotion or response from the viewer. That's drama, not news. If a
publisher or producer is using music to inject drama, they're doing it to
manipulate you and captivate viewers.
