No, the engines performed exactly as commanded.
That is exactly my point. The engines did not spool up as fast as they
could have had not the FADEC limited the temperatures during spool-up.
Don't bother telling me that the FADEC does not limit temps during
accel; this excursion protection must be observed for long life in
service. The FADEC saved the engines but helped lose the airplane. In
addition, the FADEC would also not permit overboosting, which would be
of aid during a windshear incident, such as occurred to a UAL 727 at
Staplton where going to max attainable power saved an accident - the
27 cleared the ground by 13 feet . . .so much for 'Father knows best'.
Many good points there. Computers cannot and never will know
everything, not least because the engineers and scientists who create
the programs do not have the full overlap of imagination with and
experience as pilots.
