OK, here it is: What is that exhaust hole at the back of some large
commercial airliners? I mean for instance the 777 and 747?
I have looked all over the Internet, but don't even know what to call it on
Google. Yes, I'm an idiot.
Thanks for your help.
APU exhaust. ( auxiliary power unit ). It's like a small jet engine
( turbine ) that provides electrical power to the aircraft ... usually
while the aircraft is on the ground and the main engines are shut
down. It's also can provide high pressure air to start the main jet
engines, air conditioning etc.
When I worked at United Parcel Service I realized how awesome APU's
are for ground personnel. Back when I worked there they were using
some DC-8's that did not have APU's. What an unbelievable hassle it
was to move around the ground air start equipment. And VERY noisy.
APU's on the 747's and 757's just hummed away ... way back high on the
tail and were a life ... and ear saver !
