286 missions through the course of the war wasn't that much for a
fighter pilot.

That`s 286 opportunities, minimum, where you were in danger of being
hunted down and killed by highly trained airmen, or having a mid-air
with one of your friends, or having a dodgey kite crash out from under
you just because it could. It might be a small number to you, what
with your tremendous war record, but to others, its quite credible.

Very interesting that bit about Canadian pilots in the Aleutians in
1942 or so. First I had heard of it.
