286 missions through the course of the war wasn't that much for a
fighter pilot.

That`s 286 opportunities, minimum, where you were in danger of being
hunted down and killed by highly trained airmen, or having a mid-air
with one of your friends, or having a dodgey kite crash out from under
you just because it could. It might be a small number to you, what
with your tremendous war record, but to others, its quite credible.

Heh! Understatement of the week there :-)

How about that nice little bit about crappy engines: like the Bristol
Pegasus, which powered the Bristol Beauforts which could not fly one
one engine so that "every time you took off you had 36 chances of not
making it back to base". No-one would want 286 of *those* flights!
