For the benefit of revisionists who weren't around at the time, the Nagasaki
A-bomb was dropped to convince the Japanese that the Hiroshima bomb was not
a fluke and that the remainder of their cities were at serious risk of
destruction.

The second bomb was used because things were on autopilot and the second
bomb was to be used as soon as it was ready for use.

There was no deliberative decision to use the second bomb for any
particular reason other than that was what the op plan called for.

On August 10, Truman, perhaps a bit appalled by what had transpired,
took back control of nuclear weapons and directed that no more be used
without his personal and express authorization.

Japan's first concrete indication that they were ready to surrender
was on August 10.

Truman did not want to nuke them if they were just about to surrender.

On the morning of August 14, with Japan's surrender still not
forthcoming, Truman reversed himself and ordered the military to drop
the next A-bomb on Tokyo in a week, but then a few hours later Japan
surrendered.
