Theories?

I hope he's playing a practical joke,
though I doubt it. Guess he was to
low for radar.
Flying at tree top level, then weather
or engine sputter or bird strike put him
into some dense forest, that sounds
unlikely too.

What is the likelihood of a small plane
crashing, and not catching fire?

Not looking good

No radio calls from the aircraft radio

No ELT, ELT's can be activated manually and I'n sure Steve Fossett knows
how.

Reports are that Steve Fossett has a watch that has an ELT built into it.
However it's not a crash activated ELT, he has to press a button to make it
go off.

So you have at least three means for Fossett to call for help and he hasn't
used any of them.

He's filty rich so a portable VHF radio is also a possibility

My guess is that plane crashed with no survivors.

It's beginning to look a lot like...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amelia_Earhart

One difference is Fossett is one of the worlds
greatest pilots, and a good pilot anticipates
the unexpected, did he get over confident and
take an unnecessary risk(?) Hope somebody
posts a reward ($100,000) to find out.

Why bring Amelia Earhart into this? No comparison really. She was
intruding into Japanese military airspace over the Marshall Islands on
either a spy mission out of sheer arrogance or stupidity. I think most
people would agree that they either forced her down or shot her down.

One of the Clippers went missing too with that same arrogance of just
ignoring the Japanese protests over such flights into their territory.

You generally don't want to mess with armed Imperial forces looking
for a reason to shoot you down over their perceived empire.

Which completely ignores her radio calls, which mention nothing of the
sort.

But Steve Fossett? A typical small plane accident over a hard to
locate area.

How did you come up with that absurd comparison?

The same way you inserted the "shot down by Japanese" canard! :)
