While technology exchanges are well known, I'm talking about whether or not the Germans
knew what was really going on in the Pacific. Did the Germans know about Japan's defeats
as well as they were told about Japan's victories, for example (the attache not knowing the
truth about Midway, how really bad the Solomons campaign was, etc.).
For one thing, the Germans did ask the Japanese for information about the B-29's combat
performance, since one of the early birds had flown to England so that Gen. Jimmy Doolittle
(CINC-8th Air Force) and his RAF counterpart, Air Marshal Sir Arthur (Bomber) Harris, could
inspect the plane and see it put through its paces. The B-29 in question was on the ground
only an hour when a Luftwaffe recon plane caught it on film. Naturally, the Luftwaffe wanted
information on the plane's combat performance.
For one thing, naval assets in the PTO could be diverted to the Atlantic (given that the defeat
of Germany was top priority), along with air assets. Gen. George Kinney (CINC-5th Air Force
in Australia and New Guinea) was angry that he wouldn't be getting more B-17s on FDR's
orders, as Gen. Ira Eaker (then CINC-8th AF) needed them. And at least two divisions
meant for the Pacific were sent to Europe instead in 1944.
