Brings back memories of night mission over Germany under a brillaint
full bomber's moon lighting up the Rhine river. A mission of a stange
mixture of beauty and dread.,Come out and see the bomber's moon
tonight.
Worked on land as well. I still fondly recall a night's sentry duty at
Beckenham ranges, which meant a lot less sleep than I'd have liked...
but it was a clear, dry, night with a full moon, and the Yorkshire
hillsides were washed with bright colourless silver and shadows of solid
black. After a few minutes away from artificial light you could see
nearly as well as daylight.
I'd still rather have been sleeping, but at least it was dry and still
and beautiful. And then the unit across the road suggested we share
guard duty in the superb visibility and get a brew on: I donated the hot
chocolate mix, but one of the King's Own Scots Borderers had enough
cheap brandy to add character without spoiling our judgement. A trivial
peacetime moment, but significant to me.
Art, I didn't know you flew any night missions: the usual stereotype is
that the US bombers flew by day and the RAF by night. As usual I'm eager
to learn better.

Yout description of guard duty reminds me of the times I pulled either
officer of the guard or officer of the day. Dark nights with a lot of
hot coffee.(sigh)

A more detailed description of that night mission is one my website
The mission was flown, as I remember it, in early 1945.
