Far from being just OK... it was Hitler's "Buzzsaw" and was feared by
the Allies that said the terryifying sound of it was like the
shredding of calico. It was and IS an awesome weapon (the MG-3 just
being an improved postwar version in different caliber). No US
machinegun even comes close to it for comparison.

Well, there's the M240... (okay, it's the Belgian FN-MAG, but it's a very good weapon: take the best bits of the MG42 and adjust issues like the excessive rate of fire)
