The best light infantry MG of the war, although, its rate of fire was
so high it went through LOTS and LOTS of ammo. Variants are still in
use today.

Better yet... fastest single barrel production MG of all time @
1,300-1,500 rpm! I hope the German Army doesn't get rid of it.

You wouldn't say that if you had to carry the ammunition. The cyclic
rate is way to high for light infantry. You just can't have every man in
a unit carrying ammunition. Mount the weapon on a vehicle that can also
carry many boxes of ammunition and it's a fine weapon. Mount it in a
defensive perimeter with ammunition runners and it's OK.

Far from being just OK... it was Hitler's "Buzzsaw" and was feared by
the Allies that said the terryifying sound of it was like the
shredding of calico. It was and IS an awesome weapon (the MG-3 just
being an improved postwar version in different caliber). No US
machinegun even comes close to it for comparison. That pathetic
postwar M-60 was a failed attempt at using MG-42 technology mixed with
FG-42 gewehr technology. It was a POS.
The best US MG was and IS the Colt .50 cal and I respect those. The
SAW is a Belgian adopted weapon but now the new MG-4 is superior to
that...
