Both my uncle and my dad (keen aviation enthusiasts pre-war) lived at
Hornchurch-Romford. They both remember seeing an FW Condor over
Romford, at low level (I do not have a date) being attacked by
Spitfires out of Hornchurch. One of these was shot down by a tail gun
in the Condor.
I have an internal RAF report, compiled sometime in 1941 IIRC, which
is more or less a memo summing up operations of fighter command at
that time and there are persistent reports in it of 4-engined bombers
attacking London and elsewhere. I have always assumed that these
reports were made by slightly overexcited pilots, spotters, etc. One
report, IIRC, speaks of 40 4-engined bombers in one attack - and it
just has to wrong. And no, as far as I know, the Condor never had a
tail gun.

thanks Eugene,
40 - 4 engine bombers? that is so stunning it makes you wonder where it
came from
the odd thing about the combat my dad saw was it was low level, not
more than 3000 feet. not the regulation contrails in the sky stuff.
