Why the extended exhaust stacks?

That whole design was the biggest collection of duct-work ever to fly -
the exhaust went out from the engine, down the fuselage and into a huge
blower. I've seen a 3-quarter view schematic and its no wonder that
they never really got it to work, its a real zoo under the skin. Truly
"designed by committee", it started out being built by one company and
was re-worked and completed by another, which also didn't get it to
work as advertised. Sometimes, you see this thing listed as a Bf 109
high altitude project, when it literally had nothing to do with it.
