N. Korean threat activates shield
The Pentagon activated its new U.S. ground-based interceptor missile
defense system, and officials announced yesterday that any long-range
missile launch by North Korea would be considered a "provocative
act." at http://www.washtimes.com/national/20060620-123010-4554r.htm

If the decision has been made to terminate the test in flight I hope
it was a well thought through, as not only would we lose a bonanza of
information about that particular system, it would more than likely be
considered an act of war, not to mention the egg of many faces if we
tried and failed...

Would NK even be aware that their ICBM was shot down? How would they
know?
(differing from their own missile's failure)
Interception would be many thousands of miles downrange.

They probably don't even have any downrange monitoring.

More than likely, probably right away too, it's called telemetry.

Which has to be received somewhere within range.

If it
went boom somewhere around 80k they'd probably spot the standard that did
the deed, though if it just went silent prior to reentry that might take a
little longer, but I'm fairly certain the press would notice a land based
shot from our anti-missile system and as you should know, it's their job
to talk. Even if it was an Aegis off Hawaii, sooner, probably than later,
somebody, either a seaman, or contractor would tell the tale. That's one
of the reasons I think if someone has made the decision to terminate the
missile in flight they might as well get on with it and take it out on the
ground, as well as the facilities needed to launch another anytime soon...

Bad logic. If the NK's announce the test and target it for a clear patch of
ocean that does not threaten US or allied territory covered by the GBMI
system, I doubt we would bother with intercepting it. They launch with no
warning and it meets the other criteria, that would just be too bad for
them. Ball is in their court, how they decide to handle it is up to them,
and the consequences likewise will have to be shouldered by them.
