The procedure used by Southwest is for the co-pilot to fly the
approach down to decision height, at which point he or she will
initiate a missed approach procedure, unless interrupted by the
captain. Meanwhile, the captain watches the outside view. If the
captain is able to acqure the runway visually before the aircraft
reaches decision height they take control of the aircraft from the
co-pilot at that point and land the aircraft. If not, the co-pilot
continues flying the plane and executes the missed approach.
The "pilot flying / pilot monitoring" method is in wide use in the
airline industry. Often roles are switched on a flight-by-flight
basis, so that on one flight the Captain flies while the FO
monitors, and switch for the next flight segment.
I've flown. It should also be pointed out that Southwest procedures
involve a lot more hand-flying and a lot fewer coupled approaches.
That might be good for keeping airframes "up" but it means a higher
workload for pilots and arguably wastes a very excellent capability
which most modern air transport aircraft possess.

use the ILS.
