Primarily used as a recon bird it was a fast (375 mph) high flying

Bill Bartling of the AVG shot down a Ki-46 near Kunming; it was
intercepted by three P-40s at 18,000 feet and all of them took runs on
it. The plane was from the 18th Independent Chutai in Hanoi, flown by
Capt. Takeuchi Hideharu, a loss confirmed in Japanese records.
But I've never heard the Ki-46 mentioned in connection with hickory,
and it wasn't a model 1 if that refers to its year of adoption.
(Nor have I ever heard of a Japanese plane called Hickory!)
