Before May 15th, 1975 I could see a case for sending in vertical lift troop transports without suitable escorts, but not unarmed ones.

Which says little about the MV-22 versus the CH-53. The interesting point is that your strange reference to the Mayaguez incident (why did you not just say that instead of refering solely to the date--you figured us folks in the Great Unwashed are not smart enough to recall the Mayaguez?) does not do much for your argument--ISTR that CH-53's were actually lost on that raid? So you figure that is a wonderful piece of supporting evidence for the CH-53 being shifted from heavy cargo lifter serving the follow-on waves of a USMC vertical assualt to the assault lift role? Odd debating style you have there..."Let's see, I 'll offer up an example that shoots the hell out of my claim! Yeah, that's the ticket!" Maybe you are indeed emulating ol' Vkince (who recently argued that cavalry formations no longer exist in the US Army, and offered up a reference that supposedly supported his assertion that cavalry HAD to fight from horseback...only to discover that his own cited reference stated otherwise)...

And more CH-53s would have been lost during the Mayaguez incident raid but for the efforts of the side gunners.

If V-22s had been used on that raid instead of the Ch-53s then more aircraft would have been lost (because of the missing guns and more aircraft would have been required because each V-22 carries fewer troops) and more American lives would have been lost.
