Ahead on airframe design but well behind in engine design.
At a time when British engines were conservatively rated at
250 hours between overhauls German engines were
struggling to reach lifetimes of 25 hours.

Strategically it was a disaster. It absorbed vast resources to
little effect. The weapon produced was not only hopelessly
inaccurate but cost more to build than the value of the
damage it caused on impact and more workers died producing it
than people were killed at the target end.

The whole Nazi system was hopelessly inefficient. It was based
on competing groups many of which had been given the same
goals and powers. Moreover local Gauleiters were more interested
in favouring their own interests than prosecuting the war effectively.

Albert Speer's memoirs while self serving do reveal how inefficient
German Industry was compared with Britain, let alone the
USA and USSR.

This was not a uniquely German phenomena, the B-29 program
cost more than Manhattan.
