It will be difficult to find a reliable car for $8k.
In Houston $8k will buy a 1999 Honda or Toyota with 100k miles.
Yeah, it will go another 100k miles assuming it was well taken care of and you put
about $200 worth of parts into it monthly.
If the OP lives in an area where rust is not an issue, a well
maintained A1 or A2 chassis VW is probably available for less than $1k.
I have owned several over the years, the one I had the longest was an
'84 Scirocco that I bought for $900 with 180K on the clock, I probably
drove it another 60-80K and sold for almost what I paid for it.
