It should work to have the black box transmit data to the control
tower or wherever they keep track of that track stuff. A computer in
the tower would log data from the box and software would do the
analysis of the data for a give segment of time.
Each time a car trips a signal in the immediate pit road area, a flag
is transmitted along with the box data logging features and that
tripping flag also has a mechanism to trip again when the car comes to
a complete halt, such as stopped in the pit.
When the car returns to motion, the flag again is tripped, to indicate
motion and when the car exits pit road, the black box again trips a
data flag which signals the end of another timing segment, likely
segment two.
Software in the control area computer would perform analysis on the
two data logs points for when the car initially enters pit road, stops
for pit, segment 1, then starts again after pit completes, stops the
data logging on exit of pit road, to end segment 2.
Its all in the software analyzing the two data segments and logging
events, which relate to time stamps associated with the start of the
data segment and stopping, then starting again and stopping. The
distance factor is for when a data point is started and stopped is
calculated and factored against the logging to determine time.
Um, what you describe is exactly what the transponders and
timing loops do today, except your description is for a much
simpler system, sorta like what the NHRA used around about
1950.
What Nancy, et al, want is continuous real-time speed recording,
which for a variety of reasons (some mentioned upthread) isn't
really practical.
