Winning the title is as easy, or as hard, for everyone competing for it.
If it was easy to win, Johnson wouldn't have 3 in a row, and maybe 4..
The chase has nothing to do with making it easier, or harder.
It's the same for all. It's hard.
I didn't say it was easy, only less meaningful.
I think the implication you present goes hand in hand.
I just don't get what you mean.
How is it less meaningful?
Because under the current system, a driver needs to run better than 11 other drivers over the course of 10 races.
Under the former system, a driver needed to run better than 42 other drivers over the course of approximately 34 races.
Being consistent for 10 races is less meaningful than being consistent for 34.
The 48 works very hard at winning championships.
They stay in the top 12 the first 26, and try things to get better in the
final 10. That's how you do it.
Everyone has the same op. They are just better at it.
If tomorrow, they went back to the old system, or any system,
the 48 would still be a favorite. And likely could win.
Under the old system, Johnson only has one title. Gordon would have six. Over the course of the entire year last year, Carl Edwards earned more points than Johnson.
Because the Chase format gifts free points to select drivers, among other bull*** scenarios (like 12th & 13th being tied after 26 races), the titles mean less.
to say that somehow their titles are less meaningful than say
Benny Parsons', who rarely finished on the lead lap, is a joke.
Finished on the lead lap? When did that enter the equation?
I guess I wasn't clear enough.
My point was, that the year Benny won, he rarely finished on
the lead lap.. yet won the title.
To me, that's really lame.
I would have been sort of embarassed.
More than if you had NASCAR hand you some free points with 10 races left, vaulting you from 5th to 1st in the standings without you running a single lap?
Benny raced for every point he received.
