Are there any studies on health effects of dust breathed by tire
changers during few seasons of racing? I have heard the brake pads
are still made with some content of asbestos..

No asbestos (they're all carbon-metallic now), but it's no mystery
that it isn't good for you.

OTOH, the exposure is pretty small - probably less than what a
worker at a typical tire or brake shop gets, since the Cup guys
see it one day a week, while the tire shop guy works 5 days all
year round.

John

I ask because a few races ago one of the talking heads had mentioned
Asbestos dust when one of the drivers came in for tires and he
mentioned the Asbestos.

I'm with McKoy here, the content is pretty much carbon and metal now,
no asbestos. Some teams will stick an air wand over the wall and blow
out the driver's side wheels before the changers get there from the
right side, but without a doubt, there is an exposure risk to all
changers and carriers, and likely even the jackman. And frankly, I
also agree that carbon-metallic dust doesn't sound anymore healthy
than asbestos. Neither does the carbon-carbon dust one would encounter
in open wheel and high-end sports car racing. (F1 uses carbon
(pads)-carbon (rotors) brakes I know - actually work better the hotter
they get)

Maybe they hold their breath? lol I dunno. Maybe some of those crewmen
that wear full faced helmets have a filter installed near the mouth?
Good question. Write in to This Week In NASCAR or some other "write or
call us a question" type show or website or something and see what
they say.
