Worked well for Gibbs, tho. A few years with Hendrick engines, then

Yeah, but that was over a decade ago. All their titles have come since
2001. That sort of time lapse would be a concern to Junior I'd think.
Agreed. I think it can be done again (and it would seem Gene Haas
intends to try), but I don't think it's a solution Earnhardt wants
to take a chance on.
I don't think it's coincidence that Childress is not saying much,
or apparently doing much, right now. He knows he's the best option
for Earnhardt.
It is the best fit provided Happy doesn't get more-popular-driver-envy
if Junior becomes a teammate. I think Burton would be cool with it
(and could probably actually mentor Junior a little bit too). The wild
card would be Bowyer. He has the talent, but his personality seems to
vacillate between nice guy and jerk at different times. They all do at
times I guess, but Bowyer's seems to come out in public more often,
I think Harvick would deal with it OK (in part because Earnhardt
doesn't make a big deal of his situation and tries to avoid the
attention as much as he can). And Burton, of course, is a true
professional. Bowyer is a harder call, and it would probably make
a big difference if he can get his first win before anything changes
(else he might blame the changes for the lost opportunity).
