Re: TNT's NASCAR Coverage - longest commercial ever?

Interesting that ESPN and ABC seem to have no problems split screening
(and have been doing it for at least a year or two) on IRL races, and
they don't have any trouble at all going nearly commercial free for
soccer (and that's going back many years - to when the World Cup (I
forget if it was men's or women's) was first held in the US)

Yeah, I kinda wonder if that's one of those things where it sounded
like a good idea at the time, and then after they'd done it for a
bit the sales department came up & said "hey, this isn't working
out so well, don't do it again". (*)

(IIRC, that same year's World Cup was where that horizontal scoring
bar first appeared across the top of the TV screen - time, score, and
a corporate logo that changed every 10-15 minutes. When they changed
the logo the announcer would say "this section of today's match is
brought to you, commercial free, by (insert company here)")

I thought that was very professionally done. I don't have an issue
with the TV folk getting paid, and having the announcer call out the
advertiser's name every so often, unobtrusively, isn't a problem.

I find it very annoying when there's a long commerical break, and
then when they come back the announcer reads off 3 or 4 sponsor
names while their logo covers the action - basically that's just
more commercial time. FOX is bad for that (but, in truth, FOX
has just become pretty bad all round - it's sad, considering the
high expectations we had when they started with Mike Joy & all).

Apropos of the graphic bar across the top, during TNT's telecast
they switched to a side bar showing just the car number and
position during the commercial bits. I liked that _much_ better.
With 10 cars visible at a time, I could quickly learn where the
guys I was interested in were running. Unlike having to wait
5 minutes for the top ticker to cycle round, assuming they don't
break for commercial or start it over before getting to the end
(something else FOX is real bad about).

(* probably the women's. The men's world cup was in the US for
the first time in 1994, the women's in 1999).
