My thoughts exactly. I think Adam's death took the "wind out of their
sail" and they still haven't figured out how to recover.

I agree Cindy, but for the purposes of this discussion I was leaving
emotions out of the equation. I was looking at it from a mere
business/competition standpoint.
Mike
something like this. For all intents and purposes, Adam Petty WAS the
future of PEI.
His death changed EVERYTHING. Even from merely a business standpoint, he
was the Crowned Prince. They were gearing up to crown him the next King.
Everything hinged on that. And suddenly they find themselves without a
plan.
All this is ON TOP of their personal grief. I don't know if you have
children, but the loss of one is NOT something you recover from. In a
way, they define who you are. Again, their loss changes EVERYTHING. You
lose purpose, you lose focus, and you spend all your energy just trying to
cope. To survive. I know people who have lost children who give up their
will to LIVE. Marty mentioned the old saying, "Time heals all wounds." I
don't think you "heal" from it as much as you become accustomed to the
pain.
Having never lost a child myself, this is all speculation, of course, but
my sister has lost a child. So has my mother-in-law, as well as other
friends. This is what they tell me. But I can well imagine that I'd feel
the same way if I lost one of mine. And I can see how this would affect
PEI in profound and permanent ways.
Cindy
I agree 100%. I have never lost a child but came close when my son was with
the 2ndMarDiv when they invaded Iraq in '03. There were many sleepless
nights wondering "what if". He was wounded on April 1st and was sent to
Germany and then Bethesda Naval Hospital for several surgeries. My wife and
I talked about it over and over and crazy as it may sound, we were "glad"
that he was "only" wounded as opposed to a possible "other" outcome if you
follow my meaning. I simply cannot imagine what it would have been like to
lose him.
