given. And they want them separated.
One of the problems with US tax law is that it's not plain English.
It's complicated and confusing. That's why someone like Helio needs
to hire experts (as he did) to navigate through it. The IRS and the
Justice Department have the opportunity to interpret things
differently, and shake people down.
IRS's game is intimidation and going after prominent people. That's
why they cooked up criminal charges, rather than just doing an audit
and presenting a bill based on their theory. That's why they hounded
Joe Louis.
Intimidation works. A lot of wealthy people pay more taxes than they
really need to, just to avoid the possibility of being the IRS's next
target. And the rest of us at least pay what we owe.
