I know some of you are expert, probably beyond my understanding, but:
my hotmail account (not the one I use for posting) is sending out
junk sales messages to everyone on my address list. Many of them are
bounced back as "Delivery Status Delayed" by Hotmail., but lots are
being received.
I have a good McAffee program to "protect" my computer, but don't
know where to go for simple advice on what to do (maybe there's
nothing I can do?)
Help?
If malwarebytes is ineffective - which I doubt, you probably need to
run "hijackthis" (Google it, download it, run it, save the log (it's
a text file) and send to me if necessary)
When the machine is clean, try "spywareblaster", it stops a lot of
trojans before they start.
As others have pointed out, "spybot search and destroy" is great too.
I was wondering, as I'm the only person who knows even a little bit about
computers in this ghetto that my low income (invalid benefit) leaves as the
only option where I can rent without having to share, I get lots of people
coming to me to fix their computers, both desktop and laptops.
It's almost always trojans or other malware.. I have an easilly-restored
laptop (Acronis TI) that I use to clean the HDDs, attaching them via USB and
scanning/cleaning the drives. I have a couple of questions for you if you
don't mind?
Can you suggest an arsenal of malware detection apps to have installed on
said laptop? The scans take ages via USB but it's something I can leave in
the corner running for as long as it takes.
Or, to make my life eaiser, do you know if it's possible for me to make a
bootable CD / DVD with recent definitions on that I can run so I don't have
to strip the machines? (I can burn a new one with new definitions now and
again.) I don't get paid for doing this (yet, although I sometimes mention
what beer I like I'm yet to get any) but I do get a quantity of respect and
goodwill; Commodities not to be underestimated in a low-rent part of town
with a big gang presence and high crime rates. (They left me pretty much
alone anyway but I prefer friendliness to standoffishness.)
I've thought about telling folks to go stick it but most of them can't /
won't pay what the local computer repair places charge, I have time on my
hands and I get the aforementioned. People who I've lived amongst without
speaking with for years now say hi to me, ask how I am etc. It makes life
more pleasant.
Oh, I've been asked to 'crack' passworded iPods, laptops and an iMac etc.
but I've always refused, said that it's beyond my capabilities (unless
reciepts are provided, a hard thing to check without causing offence but
something that happened once when someone realised why I was asking certain
questions... So I bypassed the password for that person).
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
