According to Mad Max Piquet has been given immunity from sanction if he
tells the truth at the FIA Renault hearing. That must be a weight off his
mind given the possibility of a lifetime ban from the sport for cheating.
How can they give immunity to somebody that voluntarily crashes his car,
putting the lives of other drivers at risk?
Just the sentence "I intentionally caused the crash by letting go of
control of the car just before the relevant corner" should be enough cause
for a life ban, even in the case of it being false.
In any case, what team would hire Piquet now?
Alonso got hired after the McLaren issues by......... oh.............Flav.
The reason for giving immunity to Piquet is that presumably it is felt that
two senior F1 people getting a young driver to crash on purpose is worse
than being a young driver pressured in to crashing by two senior F1 people.
I would accept that.
In a strange sort of way, this is one of the downsides of having had so few fatalities recently. It is now not the worst thing in the world to deliberately crash.
Me, I would say it's a lifetime ban offence. This is equivalent to letting a hitman get off scot free just to get the person who hired him. Committing murder for money is fine, but paying someone else to do so is not.
But I can see a qualitative difference between crashing into a wall and crashing into another driver.
And I guess precedent shows that crashing into another driver isn't all that serious an offence, sadly.
