1) It's entirely his own fault this situation manifested. There was not the
slightest need to ask the team for advice on what to do when Trulli had slid

but isn't reading the rule book, even briefly, something you'd expect any
semi-competent driver to have done at some time before each season starts?
He tried doing that before, last year, and got punished by the FIA for it.
I don't blame him in the slightest for being extra-cautious this time.
He's been racing for most of his life, this is his third season in F1 and
safety car or not this was a completely cut and dried situation which he
should have been able to handle by himself. It's not like he's a kid
anymore. Does he still need mummy to hold his pee pee when he goes tinkle or
is there any situation he can actually handle by himself yet?
No, he just wanted some confirmation from his team that he was doing
the right thing. Where it went wrong was when Ryan told him to let
Truli back infront. Where it went really wrong was when he changed
his mind, then tried to cover it all up. But we knew that already.
Even worse was having asked if he should let Trulli back past he goes and
does so even though the advice from the pits was given without them
understanding how he'd passed Trulli in the first place. They should have
said nothing until they understood the situation, he shouldn't have needed
to ask in the first place and he should at least have questioned their call
or just ignored it.
I disagree. I understand why he asked, and having asked, why ignore
their response? I think the responsibility lies with Ryan for making
a rash decision.

However, I entirely agree that (based the "facts" we are aware of)
this incident is entirely the fault of Dave Ryan and Lewis Hamilton.
Nothing would have happened had they simply told the truth, and it is
them, not the rest of McLaren that deserve to be punsihed. Since Ryan
has paid with his career, letting Hamilton off with a DQ does seem somewhat
light.
OTOH, I would really like the FIA to STOP INTERFERING WITH THE RESULTS
with yet more arbitrary punishments.
