If they punish Hamilton I reckon it would set a dangerous precedent.

Imagine two drivers have an incident, both are hauled in to see the
stewards, both claim it was the other guy's fault. The stewards
weigh their statements together with any supporting evidence from
teams, video, audio, etc., and arrive at a decision. Sometimes
they will do nothing, sometimes they will punish both drivers, but
often they will decide that driver A was at fault and issue a
penalty. If you accept that scenario as happening, then driver B
could be argue to have 'lied' or 'misled' the stewards, and with
a precedent they could punish him more severely, because his 'lies'
bring the sport into disrepute.

....more of a failed attempt.

Precisely. This will either set a precedent that will paralyse the
sport or it will be seen as a one-off, partial ruling that brings the
sport into disrepute.

I don't know how you two can equate these circumstances.

As with a perjurer only those who are successful in perverting the
course of justice are generally prosecuted.

AFAIAC this has already happened with Hamilton. In the second meeting
the lies were outed and he was punished.

He does not need to be punished further because the matter has already
been dealt with.

He lied, successfully, it perverted the case, he was caught, he was
punished. That's the way it should be.

....and yes I think if a driver does deserve a more severe punishment
when he is found, not just suspected, to have lied than when he simply
tells the truth from his perspective.

If Hamilton, and the team, had been truthful from the start he may have
kept 3rd place, if he hand't been believed he may still have kept 4th.
