Your 'only' is quite far from the my memory. Tcsh was available
in the 80s, as were bash and pdksh. I think we had all of them
available for use as the login shell on the Sun network when I
was at uni. I think we also had ksh too, maybe our sysadmins
were rebels?

I'm sure you're right - but I didn't come across tcsh until later.
ksh was fine - but wasn't available everywhere, and wasn't available on
most of the systems I used (I used it when it was available, though).

The only shells that that you were pretty much guaranteed to have access
to were sh and csh which were available on every system I used.
