Chad, in case you hadn't noticed, we are *deep* into the era of
"replace, don't repair" in ALL consumer electronics. All companies do
it. When home DVD players and such can be bought for 29 euros what else
do you expect? I dislike it as much as you do.
You've got a point there. Although I'm not sure many other companies are
quite so purposeful about it. Maybe that's part of the reason for their
success.
No, I don't think so. Their success is down to their capacity to rethink
and innovate, where others copy. Computers, operating systems, MP3
players, music and video sales, telephones and now app sales. All at one
time or another revolutionised by Apple, and imitated by others. There's
no other company on the planet with that track record.
I have 4 kids and have been through the cycle of buying half a dozen iPods
over the years. I'm still a little bitter at having to spend 4 or 5 hundred
bucks on an item that has either broken down or been superseded within 12
months, only to have the supplier treat me like a chump.
I know the feeling and I sympathise : I haven't personally had any
issues with them though.
Last time it happened to me was when my previous home cinema 5:1 system
packed up. It was past the 2yr guarantee, and the manufacturer tried to
discourage me from repairing it by claiming it would take 8-10 weeks (to
replace a couple of chips??), and by quoting me an outrageous baseline
price for the repair : 300 Euros or thereabouts. That was just for
opening it up, taking a look, and "minor parts replacement". Anything
more major was a supplement...
I was furious, but completely stuck. I ended up buying a much nicer
Yamaha system at a discount for 500 euros. The old one is still in the
garage, gathering dust.
Anytime I hear the name Apple now, I have trouble not throwing in a bitch
about them :p
I quite understand. I guess I've been lucky :-)
