MONTREAL, Oct 20 (AP) - The Grand Prix du Canada denied a claim by
F1 commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone that his organization is owed a
considerable amount of money for the past three years by the company
that runs the Formula One race in Montreal.
It was announced last week that the Canadian F1 race has been
dropped from the 2009 calendar. At the time, Ecclestone said it was
due to a contractual problem.
Later he was quoted in an interview with Germany's Auto Motor und
Sport:
"We tried our best, but they have not kept up their obligations for
the past three years. Until this point, they have paid only 50 percent
of the money they owe us. I wouldn't say that Canada has no chance to
return (after 2009), but first they have to pay."
In a statement issued Sunday by Paul Wilson, vice president
marketing for Grand Prix du Canada, he said, "It is true that we have
a commercial disagreement regarding our monetary obligations, but only
for 2008. This is the result of a historical difference within the
contractual understanding between the two parties.
Implying that a historical difference is different to owing money. Here he basically admits owing money, but think he has a way out of paying it.


"We were working hard to resolve the matter in order to meet our
2008 obligations when Mr. Ecclestone, without notice, surprised
everyone by unilaterally dropping the Canadian Grand Prix from the
2009 FIA schedule last Oct. 7."
Wilson, a spokesman for longtime race promoter Normand Legault,
said the company has made payments to Ecclestone for the 2006 and 2007
Canadian races.
Yeah, "made payments". Doesnt say if this was 100% of what was owed or not. If it was 100%, wouldn't you say so?

"It is totally untrue to suggest that our organization has
defaulted on payments owed for the past three years," Wilson added.
Well, no, by his own words above.

After it was announced the 2009 race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve
near downtown Montreal was not on the F1 calendar, Wilson said it no
longer economically viable for his private company to run event,
noting that all other events on this year's 18-race schedule are run
by some form of government body.
In other words, he wants to pay less, and couldn't afford it for the last 3 years.

"We do not accept that the integrity of the Grand Prix du Canada
should be called into question, when it is evident that the table is
being set for new negotiations with different levels of the Canadian
government," Wilson noted Sunday.

Well, reading that, its pretty clear that the promotors do owe Bernie money. That entire atricle is very carefully quoted to make it look like that paid, but by the spin it clear to see that the promotors are covering up.

Sorry, but I reckon Bernie might well have a point.



The point is that all the people of Canada care about is American sports. That is why there is not enough money to properly fund an F1 event.
