Just watched a revue of the 1976 F1 season on one of the Sky channels.
I know we oldies bang on about how wonderful racing was in 'those
days' but I'd forgotten how good it actually was. Rather like GP2 but
with more overtaking - great to see the front-runners passing and
re-passing.
In a pre-race interview James Hunt was asked what his strategy was and
he replied, 'cheat at the start!'.
Perhaps next year ...

That's around the time I became interested. F1 in those days was
certainly more of a blood sport. It seemed as though one of the big
names died every year. Whilst I do not advocate the ceremonial offing
of driving talent, the risk attached to F1 driving certainly made for
more exciting racing and more exciting drivers.

The field today seems bland, the drivers are boring (Fred acting like
a spoiled *** is a far cry from characters like Hunt) and the cars,
while technical marvels are pure, unadulterated crap.

Get rid of the aero packages where a pubic hair can mean the
difference between WDC and backmarker, get rid of the hyper-gazillion
rev engine speeds, get rid of the 50 trillion Euro steering wheel,
sequential, automatic shifters, pit lane rev limiters, two compound
tyres, pit strategy, obese pit bots that get whacked every once in a
while (the only real entertainment left), carbon brakes and all the
other fighter jet cum road care nonsense.

Return F1 to a state where it was a simple, albeit highly specialized,
car and a driver who either had the balls and brains to make it all
work or they died trying.

And no women ever.
