Ah, OK. Mea culpa. Reading it again, I see what you mean. Personally,
I think it's a mistaken perception though - as Sunday showed...

I haven't watched the race yet. It was a beautiful day yesterday and we
had friends round. Spent the day in the garden eating drinking and
making merry. I completely forgot about the GP ! I am downloading the
torrent and will try and watch it ce soir.

To answer your remark, I don't know if it's the right perception or not.
I expect Bernie knows what he's talking about. He's seen many drivers
come and go, and is well placed to judge them.

Personally, I think Alonso perhaps only the fourth fastest current
driver (after Trulli, Kimi and Lewis). However, I do think he is the
most complete driver out there, notwithstanding his errors this season.
All of which have come in recent GPs, since he got carte blanche from
Renault to "go all out and damn the consequences". I think Renault gave
up on 2008 some time ago, and are now only concerned with raising their
visibility by placing the car artificially higher than it should be.
