On firing up the PC this morning, I got hit with the bad news that AVG
Free is being discontinued in a few days time.

I don't want to get sucked into a monthly-payment AV scam, so I'm
looking for another free and reliable anti-virus (for XP). Surely one
exists? I always found AVG Free to be perfect for my needs - effective
yet unobtrusive. Can any of the Win experts here recommend a similar
product?

TIA, and sorry for the OT :-)

It's not. AVG free 7 is being replaced by AVG free 8. It'll upgrade
your existing installation without any problems.

Thanks Paul, Mike, and all who replied.
I was wrong, but I've taken the opportunity to switch to avast! - I'll
see how it works out. I've heard good things about it.

I've switched to Avast about a year ago. AVG was playing up and was a
hog on the system at times and i just had enough at the time.
Avast is ok, i wouldn't say it is better than or worse than AVG was,
but the system(my system, YMMV) seems to be happier with it. A
drawback is that the registration key expires after one year, so you
have to go and reregister it. Takes about a minute, so it's not a big
deal for something we dont' pay for.
I don't run any of the Swiss army knife crap that they bundle into
these things nowdays, just the standard shield, P2P and the web
shield. Same with Comodo. It's a firewall and that is all, the rest
of the modules are turned off.
