it didn't happen. I know that Max implied that Dennis misled him, but
that's a long way from libel (he's rightly cautious as a barrister).

Cautious? That's not the first word I would have applied to the speaking
style of the man who called Sir Jackie Stewart "a certified halfwit."

He's (shall we say) abrasive, but he's clued up on the law and I can't
remember him straying over the line to something he could be sued for.

He does seem to have some skill in saying things that *sound* as though
they're one thing, but they're (legally) something else...

For example, he is quoted as saying:

"Now this was a week after looking me in the eye in the World
Council and telling me there was absolutely nothing wrong and
everybody had done exactly as they should do, so I believed him,

"I've known Ron for 40 years; it's very difficult for me, when
somebody I've known for 40 years looks me in the eye and says,
'Max, I'm telling the truth with complete sincerity' - you believe
him.

"It was only when I got the list from the Italian police [showing]
323 SMS phone calls going over a three-month period between
Coughlan and Stepney, [that I concluded] there had to be more to
this."

It sounds like he's accusing him of lying, but he doesn't. He says
(repeatedly) that he believes him, and later says "...there had to be
more to this.". He very carefully doesn't say "Ron lied", but the
implication seems clear.

It's the sign of a competent lawyer, but it doesn't make very nice
reading.
