Stepney continues to insist he's innocent. (LAT Photo) MORE PHOTOS
For the first time, former Ferrari chief mechanic Nigel Stepney has
publicly admitted there has been a leaking of confidential Scuderia
technical information - but through no fault of his own.
Accused of passing on Ferrari information to McLaren chief designer
Mike Coughlan, Stepney has been in the middle of a media storm as the
"Stepneygate" scandal rolls on.
"I did not take any designs away from Ferrari. Someone passed on the
designs but it wasn't me," he told Italy's La Repubblica newspaper.
"I do not want to involve other colleagues. I know one part of the
story, not all. Ferrari know the whole story."
Last week, McLaren was summoned by the FIA, which cleared the silver
squad of responsibility on the scandal. Coughlan meanwhile remains
suspended by the team.

Well Ferrari seem to be utterly hell bent on getting Mclaren come what may -
even when there is it seems no proof that Mclaren itself did anything
'wrong'. All that happened is that someone sent one of its employees a
Ferrari document and he did not know properly what to do with it. Simply
admitting he had it would have been enough for Ferrari to go nuts and hurl
accusations at Mclaren. Why not that Ferrari itself sent the document - too
late for Mclaren to use anything from it but a great way to kill off the
only real rival and win all that's on offer - this and next year? That
people would find it hard to accept that they did that is a persuasive
reason to do it... I wonder what search of some Ferrari employees homes
would reveal... Ferrari of course does not indulge in seeking information on
its rivals. BTW why believe Ferrari over Stepney? What is there to say he is
guilty of anything? This whole thing stinks of a set up. We've all seen
Ferrari bend the rules over ten or so years and employ a driver who is a
convicted cheat - as recent as Monaco last year. Track record or what!?
What's Stepney's track record?
