Will someone please sack Max, now?
How would widening the cars make overtaking easier? Am I missing
something?
Bigger cars -> bigger hole in the air -> easier to get a draft. Also, wider track -> more mechanical grip -> less aero dependency -> easier to follow the guy in front through corners.
As for slicks, I reckon the grooved tyres they use now have about as
much grip as the slicks had when they were banned (even with
considering the reduced width). Is this an appearance question? I
understand that increasing mechanical grip while reducing the aero
grid is desirable, but it only works well if both are changed.
They've abandoned the idea of radical aero restrictions, as well. All they really need to do is ban diffusers.
With traction control gone, the drivers would of course be happy with
increased mechanical grip, but we don't want them to have too easily
drivable cars, do we?
The problem at the moment is that the cars are easy to drive, unless there's another car close in front, at which point they become difficult to drive. The best/only way to solve that is to increase mechanical grip and reduce aero, and yet the FIA are consistently moving in the opposite direction.
