McLaren has greeted the news that it has been frozen out of the Formula 1 Commission with thinly veiled anger.

The Woking-based team lost its place on the new, streamlined 13-member body, which will in future include representatives from only six teams, following a fax vote of the World Motor Sport Council.

The selection was based on the entrant’s nationality, and with Britain fielding three teams in 2008 (McLaren, Williams and Prodrive), Williams was given the nod.

McLaren expressed its “surprise” that its longevity and success had not ensured it a place on the Commission, which must approve any changes to Formula 1’s technical and sporting regulations.

“Team McLaren Mercedes note the decision of the FIA to exclude the team from the 2008 Formula 1 Commission,” the team said in a statement.

“It seems surprising that the second oldest and most successful Formula 1 team for the past 40 years, with 148 grand prix victories, has not been included as a team representative.”

McLaren-Mercedes has been a notable critic of F1's powers-that-be in recent years and was one of the more hard-line members of the dissident Grand Prix Manufacturers Association.
