Re: Order following safety car

Does it occur to anyone else that the rule about following the lead car
can end up creating a nonsense scenario, as we witnessed on Sunday?
The MF1 cars effectively denied us a race a couple of times when the
restarts took place, through no fault of their own.
Wouldn't it make more sense to have the cars line up in position order
behind the lead car, rather than in the track order that they happen to
be in at the time? I haven't really thought through the consequences,
but it did seem to be operating at its theoretical worst point at the
weekend (from a neutral-spectator perspective).

FYI, you might want to check out my post on the thread
"Its pretty clear", for info., or agree or disagreement.
What I did not go into there (to avoid confusion all around)
was the different 'rules' in place in each series.

I did note what the Speed announcers said about the current F1
rules, and I imagine they are correct.
But you also have to note the Stewards interpretations, instructions,
and past rulings (and F1 has moved toward more consistency there!)
I suggest - If they want it different than what we saw. (and that
is the real big Question there!)
it is possible this can be 'solved' by either a minor
tweak in rules or by Steward's clarification.
But every change in restart rules has totally other consequences.

"larkims" view is very correct if you as a spectator want a brand
new chance at an almost dead even start and plenty of chances
for (really earned or unearned?) overtaking. Many drivers and
spectators are not thrilled at the idea of a seriously worked for
lead being lost, and then the guy behind presented with a great
chance to overtake.

The negative consequence of 'larkins' proposal is a fairly big one.
Suppose you are a midfielder(-), and for whatever reason
are just 10 seconds behind your nearest competitor and you
get lapped by leader. Current rules are you are now
one lap down but 20 +/- seconds ahead on track.
Your proposal adds great insult to this injury by putting you
over a lap behind them! (ahhhgg, insult and injury!!)
Could tend to make drivers --'hedge' on pointing leader by!
The sport needs the midfielders.

Iain's OTOH is valid.
