I liked the ad, well all the way to _the_ line. Maybe I didn't get
the joke, is it a quotation? Does it come from a movie, tv series
which might be be hugely popular down there?
If not then it just doesn't fit into the friendly atmosphere of the
ad. Wouldn't a simple "Where are _you_?" do the thing?
But, on the other hand, we're talking about it, aren't we? So, the ad
works then ;-))
When an Australian says 'bloody hell' it's really just a mild
exclamation. In this case of friendly surprise and confusion at not
knowing where you are.
It's very difficult to define precisely as a phrase because it changes
with context. I think that it only really works with the very people
it *doesn't* target!
It worked for this Californian. I thought it was a nicely done promo
piece. The only thing I was left wondering about was if all the barmaids
in OZ look as good as the one in the ad.
Bud (who lives so far out in the sticks that we only have one bar within
15 miles and the barmaid's pushing 70)
.
